Our Angel Cat Molly
Molly came to me from my loving girlfriend Susan’s home who had been caring for her. Born and raised for several years in Boulder, CO I was told that Molly loved hunting the snakes and lizards there. Her original mommy, a sweet little girl named Lauren wanted and loved her so much that she took Molly with her when she had to move to California. I first met Molly at Susan’s house where Lauren lived. Molly would come out of the bedroom and be curious and affectionate. I knew she was a sweetie but was going learn just how much so when she came to live with us when Lauren and Susan could sadly no longer keep her.
Molly adjusted well to a new life in our home complete with a big dog and several other cats, none of which were very welcoming to her. Yet Molly made friends with each one in her own way, never even had to raise a paw in self defense, never growled at all. She was lovingly placed into Steven’s bedroom and slept there with him. She spent her first years on his bed at night and while he was studying. One of my cats, a spoiled tabby named Leah-kitty, soon got used to Molly on Steven’s bed and would join her there. Together they napped on the bed in front of a sunny window while Steven studied. On colder nights Molly would snuggle under the covers with Steven until they both got too warm. Steven loved Molly too and helped take care of her. Molly enjoyed being a house-cat and seldom ventured outside very far. She had her cat tree to climb on, lots of good food, other cats and a dog for company during the day, a few sunny windows from which to watch the bird feeder and take naps and a very loving new mommy and daddy. She would show us her superb hunting skills by occasionally bringing in lizards that she captured from the back yard. I would find her lizard gifts hanging on my suit jackets like pins in the closet or parts of them near my desk chair.
The name “Molly” is so perfect for this delightful cat. It’s a Gaelic word for “girlfriend, gal pal, female buddy.” It seems like being a good pal was her mission in this world. Molly spent her time with whoever she felt needed her, just as she did with Lauren and Susan. She was a loyal feline companion, a buddy and a pal. She would often join my husband Mike on the bed and slept with him while he was alone and sick at home. She also liked to nap with Humphrey, the dog, on top of a big white chair in the sun room. When Sassy joined the family, Molly comforted her by spending much time in the garage with her in the sunny window while Sassy got adjusted to her new home. When Mike moved into the convalescent home, I often worked alone in my home office. That’s when Molly lured Sassy into my office with me where they napped together on the bed in there, along with Humphrey, of course. The four of us have been in one room together like this for the past four years. It was a blissful, serene and peaceful time for me and my furry family.
Forget me Not - Molly
Molly tried also to bond with the other three cats, Amber, Tuxedo and Angel but each were more active or aloof than Molly could manage. However, they did join in together for “food frenzies” one of our most fun times together. Food frenzies are what happen when I get home from an evening banquet or restaurant and bring leftover steak that my boyfriend didn’t finish. (I am a strict vegetarian so fresh meat rarely enters the house.) They could smell it and lined up in the kitchen staring at me impatiently awaiting their share. At these times Molly would be her most vocal, not wanting to miss one piece of meat. I made sure she got as much as she could handle, despite heavy competition, and in return she would crawl under the covers with me on cold nights until she got too warm. After Mike left our home, she frequently slept on my pillow or on my legs often, and even though I couldn’t move sometimes, it was wonderful to have her loving presence along with Humphrey and Sassy. During my sad moods, Molly would come closer and lay right next to me whether she got leftover meat treats. I think now that Sassy learned to do this by watching Molly, for Sassy took Molly’s place on my pillow when Molly was no longer comfortable enough to sleep there for long. I believe Molly showed Sassy the way like a big sister in many ways.
Molly, Everyone’s Pal….
